Historic Briggs Farm . . . a world apart

stoveYou can see little touches of the history of Briggs Farm just about anywhere you look, from the wood-peg construction of the old granary to the antique wood stove in the farm house kitchen. Dating to the mid-1800s, Briggs Farm is a world away from the electronic crush of the 21st century.

This is a place to sit on the front porch and listen to the music of nearby Cedar Valley Creek . . . to barn swallows calling to one another as they swoop over fields . . . to tree frogs and crickets, and the wind in the pines.

This is a place to smell fresh-cut hay, dark earth, apple blossoms, fallen leaves, a crackling fire, the sharp cold of approaching snow.

This is a place to meet red-tailed fox and deer, wild turkey and eagles, coyotes and brown trout, wood turtles and hooded warblers, showy lady’s slipper and jeweled shooting stars.

In this place, fresh air and exercise sharpens the taste of the food, whether it’s a mess or morels and grass-fed ribeye steak cooked on a wood-burning stove, a hand-made pizza wood-fired in an outdoor brick oven, or just a handful of berries picked trailside–a reminder that the best things in life often come in small packages.

In this place, you’ll find long views. Ridge-tops and tree stands offer views that encompass the magnificence of the Cedar Valley, part of the biological and geological heritage of the Driftless Area.

And this is a place that gets dark enough, most nights, to see across half a galaxy of stars.

That’s why so many people who come out here say, “It’s wonderful out here!”
